I was tucking Asher in and he told me he was scared to go to sleep. I asked him what he’s scared about and he said “the grannies”. I was like, the grannies??
What grannies, where did you see them? Where are they?
And Asher says, “they’re waiting outside the house”…
I responded, “oh Asher, you know what would happen if someone was standing outside our house?? Wilson would bark so loud, he’d scare them away! That’s what he does!”
And right on cue- Wilson suddenly starts barking like crazy and runs down the stairs! Asher’s eyes got soooo big and I totally jumped at first too!! But Wilson had made it down to the front door and still wouldn’t stop barking… So then I had to go downstairs to turn the light on (cuz sometimes he needs to see that there’s nothing in the yard to finally stop barking)
I will admit that I was a little afraid I’d see someone in the yard at that point too… but all was well! All except for poor Asher, who was waiting for me at the top of the steps, stone faced and probably traumatized as I’m trying not to laugh at the absurdity… seriously, Wilson! Bad timing!!!
*Asher did have a smile back on his face by the time I got up the stairs, but then didn’t fall asleep until after 10..
Two things to add- Wilson started barking again the next morning and I saw a large golden lab in our yard (not the neighbor’s but had a collar). It ran away as soon as I opened the door to talk to it. Could have been in the yard last night(?)
– Also, I asked Asher a little more about the grannies and where he thinks that came from or where he usually sees them. He said that they don’t like the song- “Hey granny, hey granny, you can’t catch me. Hey granny, hey granny, you got wet feet!” said he learned it at school… (never heard this before) When I asked him why he was scared of the grannies, he said he was scared last night cuz the granny was trying to catch a frog… (?)
